In August, 2019, six Form 5 students, our NET, Mr. THISTLE, and our school social worker, Ms. CHAU, had the opportunity to attend the annual YMCA summer camp in Bavaria, Germany. In addition to a week spent cooking, reflecting, and sharing with the international campers, they also had the opportunity to explore German culture, architecture, and natural wonders. The theme of the camp was "Impacting the World", and all participants were very impressed by the experience.
During the first week, participants visited popular attractions in Bavaria. The Old City Walk, visits to the highest snow mountain in Germany, the concentration camp memorial site in Dachau and a myriad of museums definitely broadened the participants’ horizons - they learned much about the society of Germany, Germans’ style of living and their unique culture.
The Y-Camp was the highlight of the trip. It was the first time they stayed with over 150 people from all around the world for a whole week, spending the entire time communicating in English. In addition, they prepared the Asian Cultural Night, where many games and activities were held to introduce Hong Kong and Asia to all the other campers. The highlight was preparing dinner for all the participants, which was a fresh and interesting challenge to cope with, and required cooperation. Participants would never forget the new friends they made from around the globe and how much fun they had together. Every moment was a joy.
The students thanked the school for providing this opportunity to extend their knowledge, exchange ideas with people outside Hong Kong, and get to know more about the world. They also gave their sincere gratitude to Ms. CHAU and Mr. THISTLE for planning the trip and leading the way.
